Friends of St Margarets Church
The parish church of Upton is by far the most historic building in the village. Our organisation has been set up to improve and maintain the fabric of the building, as this seemed an unfair and unrealistic task for a small group (of largely pensioners) who attend church services there.

Our aim is to make the church a more accessible venue for the whole community. Whilst we may be able to apply for grants for particular projects, most of these are dependant on evidence of local initiative in fund raising. If you are interested in helping to preserve the architectural jewel in the crown of Upton, you might like to consider becoming an associate ‘friend’ by subscribing to our annual membership scheme.

Individual membership is £6. Couples £10, Families £12.

Members will receive regular updates of our planned activities and will be invited to a pre-Christmas reception.

If you would like further details please contact our treasurer on 01493 750518
Thank you,
Ruth Warner. (Chairperson, Friends of St Margaret’s)

THANKS TO THE HARDY BUNCH 10th September 2005, 21:08
As we tried to erect a couple of defiant gazebos behind the village hall in a frisky, rain laden south westerly wind, I admit to being a bit apprehensive about a garden party being a ‘good idea’ at all! This turned to anxiety as there was a power cut and unfamiliar alarms rang in the hall, then to despair when the band phoned in sick.

As we tried to retrieve the gazebos, now taking turns at kite impressions in the wind, we could only laugh at the ‘Britishness’ that made us persevere with the enterprise against the odds!

We doubted anyone would be potty enough to venture out in such unpromising weather conditions to leap about on a bouncy castle, eat ice-creams, and part with their hard earned cash in support of our efforts to fund raise for a disabled loo in the church. Fortunately we were wrong, and a hardy bunch did turn up and support us, to the tune of £430. So, if you were one of them, many thanks.

And for every one who thought number 7 was a brick………..well it was an egg box (you need to have been there!). Many thanks to all the willing souls who baked, donated , and generally worked very hard to make the event as successful as it was.

Watch out for our next amazing venture ‘For Your Convenience’ a Ladies Pampering evening, on Saturday 8th October…………..watch this space.

St Georges Day Concert - 23.04.05 18th July 2005, 20:42
The event was held at St Margaret’s Church Upton, and was very well supported. The majority of the hundred plus audience was drawn from Upton and local villages, but we know that people had traveled from Norwich, Colchester and London to attend.

We are very grateful to Doug Clark and the Brundall Singers and Lenny Stamp for their invaluable performances, not to mention our very own Jeanette on the organ. They provided Upton’s answer to the ‘Last night of the Proms’ with a long to be remembered finale of Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem.

It was a great sight to see the church full of people joining in celebrating the occasion, singing and waving their St George’s flags. They clearly enjoyed themselves, happily rounding off the evening with the wine and nibbles provided by the Friends of St Margaret’s.

We are indebted to all those who helped not only on the day, but also behind the scenes, to make the event the success it was
Our thanks must go, (in no particular order) to: the car park attendants, the publicity team, the cleaning and flower arranging team who made the church look so beautiful, the refreshment team, financial backers and the administrator and ticket sellers and purchasers.

The treasurer’s report indicates that the total raised from tickets sales and donations on and before the event has reached £700.
We hope this event sets a precedent for the success of others planned for the future.

The next ‘For Your Convenience’ event will be a garden party on
Sunday 14th August 2~ 4 p.m. at the village hall.
